Informal Buddhist Meditation/Study Group

Come experience our very own UUSA Buddhist Informal Meditation/Study Group. No experience necessary. The format will be a half hour of meditation followed by a half hour selected Buddhist Reading and then a half hour of discussion while sharing some tea and a snack.

We meet every 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month from 7:30 – 9:00 PM. Meeting locations and schedule may vary. Please check the calendar or email Larry for more details.

Please bring a cushion to sit on; we do have chairs as well.

Here are some of my favorite books about Buddhism and meditation (along with links for more information):

Buddhism Plain and Simple book cover

Buddhism Plain and Simple by Steve Hagen

This is the first book I recommend for people that want to understand Buddhism in a practical way without a lot of cultural or historical "baggage".

Mindfulness in Plain English book cover

Mindfulness in Plain English by Bhante Henepola
Gunaratana

A very practical, insightful guide to meditation itself. With chapter titles such as Meditation: Why Bother, What To Do With Your Mind, and Dealing With Problems, you will find lots of guidance to help start or develop your meditation practice.

Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind book cover

Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind by Shunryu Suzuki

If you are looking for an open door into Zen Buddhism, this is a great place to start. The book is a collection of informal talks on Zen meditation and practice. Stories like To Polish a Tile are classics.
